Coal Heritage Trail
Coal Heritage Trail: The Virginia Coal Heritage Trail is located in the Heart of Appalachia's coalfield region. Miles of scenic byways stretch through seven counties in far Southwestern Virginia, including Wise County and the city of Norton to provide travelers with glimpses of unique coal mining towns that were formed more than a century ago. The town of Appalachia is full of coal heritage and the nation’s leading energy resource continues to be mined in that area. Some coal mines are still in operation today and can be seen at various locations through the scenic mountains and valleys along the route.
